Back in Shanghai for a bit and I felt it was time to take a closer look at all the Chinese craft beers I’ve been trying. Yes there have been quite a few, the good, the bad and the what-were-they-thinking?!
One of my favourites is a small brewpub in the giant city of Wuhan. Never heard of Wuhan? Well neither had I but my Chinese teacher is actually from there, so I know their Moon Cakes are the best. A little over 8 million people live here and it’s the capital of Central China’s Hubei province.
And there’s a brewpub called No. 18. The head brewer is Karl Jiang, he’s been brewing for about five years. I tried his Tiao Dungho IPA (if I’m not mistaken Tiao Dungho means ‘jump into the East Lake’ perhaps that’s Chinese for ‘taking a running jump’?) and it’s a great IPA! Packs a lot of flavour for 5.5%, nice floral, hoppy, solid IPA. So yes, one day I’d like to go to Wuhan!
